Sugoi!
“Sugoi” is a Japanese that approximates “wow” or “amazing” in English, and it is deserved – unabashedly – in relation to this outstanding performance of a small collection of works by Brazilian composer, Heitor Villa-Lobos.
If you’ve never encountered Villa-Lobos before, these sonate and vignettes are as good as any of his works to introduce you to his brand of supersaturated romance, not only owing to the pieces themselves but also to the superlative performances by Yuko Miyagawa and Aki Kuroda.
The recording os also exemplary, music flowing so lavishly that you’d be forgiven for thinking that you were in the very presence of the musicians.
